October was a busy month! We had a lot of fun, and it is always a little sad to see the month end. However, this fist few days of November have also been eventful. First, Real Salt Lake donated books to our classroom. The kids were so excited to see all of the new books for our classroom. They also donated sets of books, so now I can start my book clubs during small group time. We also had a visit from the Art Truck. This was a fun activity where the kids learned about how art can bring communities together and open up discussions about people we find in our communities. It was a wonderful message and the kids were even able to participate in an art project called "Working Hands." This will be displayed in the school. I hope you all get a chance to see it! The pumpkin projects were wonderful and the kids did a great job reading to the first graders. I was really proud of them!! Halloween was a blast and the kids enjoyed the party. Halloween is always one of my favorite days of the year at school, and this year was a lot of fun. I loved seeing their costumes! Below you will see pictures of all of the fun things we have been up to at school. Ms. O I love when the kids share their talents with the class. Sabrina played my piano for the class. I was so excited because my piano doesn't get played nearly enough! Pumpkin Projects Halloween New Books and the Art Truck Wow! I can't believe it is already October. Last month flew by so fast. We did so many fun activities. I know that some of the highlights were our field trip to Red Butte Garden, RadKids, the book fair, and the Storytellers assembly. There are so many fun things that I have planned for this month. This is always such a special and fun time of year at Sunrise. I have posted a slide show from our field trip and RadKids. I hope you all enjoy your OctoberThe first two weeks have flown by! I hope you have all adjusted to being back in school. We are slowly getting into our classroom routine. It usually takes a few weeks before we have figured things out. The kids are excited about the activities we will be doing in third grade. I have some pictures below of a few fun things we have done the past two weeks. We did a STEAM activity, we do some GoNoodle exercises, and our wonderful new school counselor, Ms. Richardson, came to talk to the class about empathy and being a good classroom citizen. She read The Bad Seed and We're All Wonders. These are both great books to read to kids when discussing issues of empathy, kindness, forgiveness, and how we should treat ourselves and others. Ms. O I can't believe that it is already May! The year has gone by so fast. The kids started their RISE tests today. I am so proud of how hard they have worked this year. We have also been busy practicing for our program that is in a couple of weeks. The kids are excited for all of you to see their program. After RISE, we will start learning a little 4th grade math. We will also finish geography and Reading Street. Last week the kids turned in their culture reports. They did a wonderful job! I really enjoyed looking at the posters, artifacts, and Google Slides presentations. I can tell that a lot of thought and time went into these projects. Way to go! Below is a sideshow of the culture reports. The kids did a great job presenting to their classmates. Ms. O We had so much fun on our field trip to the Clark Planetarium. The kids were able to explore the planetarium and play with all of the exhibits. This is always a great day for the third grade! They also watched a movie about the different planets in our solar system. They also participated in a presentation about the Earth and Moon. I am sad that this was the last field trip of the year. I always love getting the kids out of the classroom so that they can have new and interesting experiences. Thank you again to the parents who chaperoned, not only this field trip, but all of the field trips we have done this year. Without parent helpers, field trips would be really difficult. Thanks!! Here are some pictures from the planetarium. We had a super fun Valentine's Day! I loved all of the boxes that the kids created. They were so excited to show off their boxes and hand out their valentines. I have to admit that I am a sucker for this day and it is one of my favorite days of the school year. We had a special surprise when Shaylee's mom and her singing group came in and serenaded us! We also had a fabulous party. Thank you so much to the moms who came and helped organize our class party. This past month, we also started Junior Achievement. Thank you to the Erickson family for taking on this task. The kids look forward to the lessons and we are excited to see what is next! Ms. O Below are some pictures from JA and Valentine's Day: We had a great time on the field trip yesterday! The kids enjoyed the dancing and they were very respectful to the dancers and theater. The kids looked great. I loved seeing the girls in their dresses and the boys with a little extra gel in their hair :) Here are a few more pictures from our field trip: It has been a busy new year so far! We started a new science unit on the Earth and the Moon. We have been working in our interactive notebooks and doing some fun in class activities. We will continue on with the unit next week. We did an activity where the kids worked with partners and each took turns pretending to be the sun, as the figured out how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the moon orbits around the Earth. We also talked about and watched a neat video about lunar eclipses and the blood moon. We also had a class discussion about star trails and I showed the kids a time elapse video of how the stars look as the Earth moves. I also introduced a new program to our classroom. I have been working with the kids on Adobe Spark. They really love it! I've started out by having them make short videos. This past week, I had them make videos about our vocabulary words. The kids searched for pictures that depicted the vocabulary word and put them in a short video. The kids got really creative, by adding music and other graphics. I have decided that instead of the usual vocabulary definition worksheet we do every week, I am going to have the kids create a project using Adobe Spark. This was a lot more engaging than a worksheet(LOL). I also gave them an opportunity to share in small groups. I also noticed that kids were a lot more confident with their vocabulary words this week! We ended our week with an interesting assembly about bald eagles. The kids loved learning about these amazing birds!! Here are some pictures from the past couple of weeks!! Well, we are almost to the halfway point of the year. We have had a great year so far and I look forward to what is in store for 2019. Our class has a lot of fun and interesting things planned and I think the kids will have a great rest of the year! The kids did a great job at our school Christmas assembly. The third grade sang Blitzen's Boogie. The students had fun and it was great seeing them perform! Last week, we had a very special visitor to our class. Shaylee's grandpa came to our class to tell us about Native American culture. He lived in Colorado and spent time with a Native American tribe in that part of the country. He also learned many different dances. He showed the class many different artifacts and demonstrated the Hoop Dance of the Taos Pueblo Tribe. He even taught the kids how to do some of the dance steps. I had an opportunity to go to Taos when I lived in El Paso and it took me back to that special place! Today we did a lesson on the Northern Lights. I showed the kids a time lapse video of the Aurora Borealis and we had a discussion about what causes this phenomenon. The students then created their own Northern Lights pictures. I love this time of year with my students. It makes me feel like a third grader again :) I hope that you all have a wonderful holiday and Happy New Year! Ms. O Here are some pictures! I can't believe that it is already December! The weather is starting to get pretty cold. Please make sure your student is bundled up appropriately for the winter weather and snow. Also, please talk to your student about being safe outside in the snow. We do not throw snowballs or ice on the playground. I absolutely enjoyed the kid's Native American projects! It was a great warm up for our culture reports that we will be doing in the spring. I want to give a big shout out to Katherine, Noah M., and Matt for doing a Google Slides presentation. I highly encourage more students to do this for our culture reports. We also had our Hour of Code. The kids were able to create projects by coding. They had a lot of fun doing these! I even joined in on the fun! For the rest of the year, the kids will have more opportunities to code and create projects. They were pretty excited when I told them! I love this time of year at school. I have a lot of fun projects and activities planned for the next week and a half!! Below I have uploaded pictures from our Native American presentations and Hour of Code. Ms. O |
