It has been a great time in the classroom. The students have been working on their Native American projects at home. In the class, I have been highlighting a few different Native American tribes in order to help the students with their projects. I can't wait to see their projects on Tuesday, December 6th. I hope to see many of you there! Last week we completed a mini-unit on the Russian painter, Wassily Kandinsky. I integrated third grade social studies, art, geography and our current Reading Street unit on "People and Nature." We discussed Russian culture. I played them some Russian music and I showed them a clip from a Russian ballet. I had the students find Russia on a map and the globe. We discussed the differences between the two. I also showed them an atlas and told them how to use one. We then discussed the artist Kadinsky. I did a PowerPoint presentation which briefly discussed his life and his style of art. I also showed them some of his art. I ended by showing them his painting, Winter Landscape. I aksed the students to recreate their own version of this painting. On the second day of the lesson, I had them think about our current reading unit while they painted. Kadinsky believed that his art was a direct reflection of his inner feelings. I had the students do the same, while thinking about nature and how we connect with nature. I loved what the students created. You can tell by looking at their pictures that they were engaged and excited about this lesson. I can't wait to plan something similar for next month! I will be displaying their paintings on my hallway bulletin board through January. I hope you all get a chance to take a peek! Looking ahead: We will continue with multiplication and division using a multiplication chart. I highly recommend that you download or purchase a multiplication chart to have at home. This week we will be focusing on the story, "Pushing Up the Sky." The following week we will focus on the story "Seeing Stars." With this story we will be working on expository/informative writing. This is a unit that I put together along with Ms. Dee at a writing training. We are excited to teach this to our students. My class will be doing Sunrise Soaring News on Friday, December 16th. We are doing a Charlie Brown theme. The kids are pretty excited and have already come up with some great ideas. Winter Break is coming! The dates are December 22-January 2. I hope you all have a great week! Ms. O Below are some slideshows of our classroom adventures. Some of Mr. Hodge's students joined our class for a day. We had fun playing math games with them. Ms. O I was born and raised in Utah. After I graduated from the University of Utah, I lived in California, Texas, Pennsylvania and Hawaii. I am happy to be back in Utah. I enjoy paddle boarding, cooking, hiking, skiing and running. I have two adorable kids who keep me pretty busy. I love Mexican food and coffee. This is my third year at Sunrise and I am so happy to be a part of the Sunrise community. Third grade is my favorite grade! Archives
