Last week was a busy week in our class. We went on our field trip to This is the Place Heritage Park. We did have a slight detour getting to the park. Our bus broke down and we had to wait for a replacement. It was a little crazy, but I was so proud of my class. The kids followed the safety rules, listened to the person in charge (me) and kept their cool. I was impressed with how they handled the situation! When we did get to the park, the kids had a great time. We learned about what life was like for people living in early pioneer communities. The kids enjoyed getting outside and exploring the park. This week we have a lot going on in our class. On Wednesday, we will be taking our unit one math test. We will spend Monday and Tuesday reviewing and preparing for the test. This week our story is Supermarket. The kids were given their spelling and vocabulary words on Friday. Since it is a short week, we will take the test this Thursday. We will be focusing on long vowel patterns: ee, ea, ai, ay, oa, and ow. We will also discuss multiple meaning words and compare/contrast. I am excited that we will be working with our class Chromebooks this week. I will also be putting the kids in their bookclub groups. I look forward to reading their bookclub journals and listen to their discussions on their at home reading. I am also going to work with the kids on writing. I will be giving them a writing prompt and a four square chart to help them complete their paragraph. Don't forget that we do not have school on Friday the 23rd. Also, picture day is on Thursday the 22nd. If you did not sign up for a parent/teacher conference time, one will be assigned to you. If you need to make special arrangements to meet with me, let me know and we can schedule a time to meet. The book fair starts on September 28th and Grandparents and Goodies is also on the 28th at 7:30am. There will not be any school on September 30th. It's going to be a busy couple of weeks!! Ms. O Here are some pictures from our field trip: Last week was SOAR week and the students took part in several SOAR activities throughout the week. We discussed all of the ways they can SOAR throughout the year and be a positive part of our school community. This week our story is Kumak's Fish. Our question of the week: How can we achieve goals? We will be discussing the different ways they can reach their goals. The class will also learn how to sequence when discussing the plot of a story. Also, we will discuss the importance of visualization when reading a story. The students should be able to use details of what they are reading to describe how things may look, feel, smell or taste. The phonics pattern is word endings: -ed, -ing, -er, -est. This week we will start division. The students will work on separating numbers into equal groups. They will also learn how to divide by using repeated subtraction. On Thursday we have our field trip to This Is The Place Heritage Park. I know that the kids are excited and it should be a great time. A big thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to be chaperones. Joni Anderson will be coming with us. I have a couple of activities that we will be doing in class in order to prepare the kids for the field trip. These activities will revolve around what life was like living in an early pioneer community. In October I will have my math and reading groups set and will be asking for parent volunteers to help in the classroom. If you would like to volunteer, please let me know. I am still looking for more parents to volunteer for my Mystery Reader program. The PTA would still like more parents to sign up. The PTA is the best way to help the school! Parent/ Teacher conferences are coming up on September 28th and 29th. Sunrise would like to have 100% attendance. Thank you to the parents that have signed up. If you haven't signed up, please do as soon as possible. Let me know if you can't make any of the available times and we can set something up for another time/day. The Book Fair will also begin on September 28th. Last week we discussed how trading with friends can help us learn more about them and ourselves. I had the students write a paragraph discussing this topic. They also had to illustrate a picture that depicted their writing. Below are some highlights: I hope you all have a fantastic week!
Ms. O This past week was a busy week for my third graders. We finished our first story and had our fist spelling, vocabulary, phonics and comprehension test. We also continued to work on our early multiplication concepts. The kids learned how to multiply using grouping, number lines and arrays. We also worked on a small science unit where we compared living and non-living things. Brain Boosters also started. The kids were excited to go to PE, art, computer lab and library. Next week we will be reading our next story, What About Me? Look for the spelling list and vocabulary list on Tuesday. We will continue to work on early multiplication concepts. Our class will also start keyboarding. Next week is SOAR week. This year the school is doing an Olympic theme. Tuesday, the kids are supposed to dress in the colors of the country they were routing for during the Olympics. Wednesday, the kids should dress up like their favorite Olympic sport or athlete. Thursday, wear sun hats and bring water bottles. Friday, wear the Olympic colors: blue, black, red, yellow, green and/or white. I have added my class to the Pearson Realize site. You can access our Reading Street materials at home. Also, I have added all of the students to the Reflex math site. You can also access this from home. I encourage all of you to utilize Reflex math for extra math practice. I will assign Reflex math for homework from time to time. Please let me know if you have any questions using these sites. It was wonderful seeing many of you at Back to School Night. If you were unable to attend I just want you to know about a couple of things. First, I will be doing a program in our class called Mystery Readers. This is an opportunity for parents to come in the classroom and read to the students. This will happen on Fridays starting in October. We won't tell the kids who is coming in and therefore it will be a surprise for the students. I still have a lot of open spots, so let me know if you would be interested. I will also be utilizing parent volunteers in my class this year. I haven't completely worked out all of the details, but if you are interested please let me know. Many of the students are forgetting to bring their planners to school. Please remind them to bring them to school. I also want their planners signed each night. This is another important way for us to communicate. Your kids are fantastic and I look forward to our week! Ms. O Below are some pictures of the kids doing a small group activity about arrays. |
