October was an incredibly busy month! We had a lot of really fun and interesting programming! I think that the kids enjoyed these special activities. We had a wonderful art lesson about the artist Henri Matisse. The students were able to create their own collages in a similar style as the famous artist. I thought that their projects turned out really well! I was so excited that we were able to have the Drum Bus come to Sunrise. I have thought that this would be a great experience for my students and I was glad that the other third grade classes also wanted to participate. The students were taught some basic drumming techniques and learned a little about other cultures and how they use drumming. The lesson mainly focused on Eastern African drumming. The kids sang a song called "We Are Awesome!" That was their favorite. The Pumpkin book reports always turn out so wonderful and this year was no exception. Their projects were really cute and the first graders enjoyed listening to their stories and seeing all of the different pumpkins! Halloween at school is one of my favorite days of the year! I love seeing the kids dressed in their costumes and there is always excitement in the air. It makes me feel like a kid again! Our party was a lot of fun and I appreciate the wonderful moms who came in to help!! Finally on Thursday, we had some educators from Thanksgiving Point come into our classroom to teach the kids about living, non-living, and once living items. They also discussed the life cycles of plants and animals. The kids were able to examine (up close) bugs and tulip bulbs. I can't believe how fast the fall is flying by!! Ms. O I hope you enjoy all of these great pictures!! Henri Matisse: Pumpkin Projects: Drum Bus: Halloween: Thanksgiving Point Activity Two subjects that I LOVE to teach: science and social studies. I wish I had more time to teach these subjects each day. I was so happy to see how excited the kids were when I told them we would be starting our first science unit on living and non-living. The kids have enjoyed working in their interactive notebooks and we also made terrariums. This was the first time I have tried this activity and I am so glad that we did them in my class this year. It was a fun activity and the terrariums turned out great! The kids loved building their terrariums. The kids were also given an introduction to our Native American social studies unit and our unit on cultures, by going on our field trip to This is the Place Heritage Park. The kids had fun exploring the park. I am excited to dive deeper into this unit. I love seeing how excited this group of kids get when we are learning new things! Below are a couple of slideshows of the kids: It has been a busy couple of weeks of school. The first few weeks are always a little hectic as the students learn the rules and routines of their new classroom. I think that these kiddos are doing a great job so far and I am proud of their progress. I am especially excited to see how well they are doing in math. The online practice buddies can take some getting used to, but the kids are getting the hang of them! I would love a parent volunteer to help the kids during their math independent time. Please let me know if you are interested! This past week was SOAR week. During this time, we reflect and learn about our school rules and behavior expectations. S-staying safe inside and out O-on time and on task A-accept responsibility R-respect self, others, property The last day of SOAR week the students were asked to wear school colors, spirit wear or dress up like their favorite super hero. I dressed up like a third grade teacher :) We also had our first parent come in and read to our class. Thanks Kim!! We have a lot of fun things coming up the rest of this month. I am excited!! Here are a couple of pictures of the kids: I can't believe we made it to the last day of third grade. The last day of school is always a little bittersweet for me. I have grown attached to the kids and will be sad to see them leave Ms. O's classroom. However, I am proud of them and excited for these kids to move on to 4th grade. I know they are all going to do well next year. At the beginning of each year, I set goals for my students and I am so happy that this group of kiddos not only met all of these goals, they exceeded them! I am more than confident that they are ready for next year. We had a wonderful time at the planetarium last week! Here are some pictures from our field trip: Isaac was our final Character Ed recipient for the year. Isaac is always honest, kind, and a friend to all!! Anyone who knows Leif knows he LOVES Legos!! I was happy to see him share some of his creations with us: Katie brought in and read one of my favorite books, The Book with No Pictures. She did a wonderful job reading it to the class! Jacqui has brought in a few books to share with our class throughout the year. She brought in one of my all time favorite books written by a personal hero of mine, Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters. It was a perfect book to end the year on because it discusses the importance of being unique and following your dreams no matter the obstacles that might be in your way. It has been an incredible year! Thank you for sharing your wonderful kids with me!! I hope you all have a wonderful summer and good luck in 4th grade :)
Ms. O Lilly was our Character Ed recipient for April!!! I am so proud of this little lady :) I absolutely loved how my door was decorated for Teacher Appreciation Week. It meant so much to me!! The kids left wonderful messages on the door and I'm not going to lie, some of them made me cry. I am so lucky to have a really special group of kids this year!! The kids practiced really hard for the 3rd Grade program. I am putting together some pictures and video from the actual program and will post that soon! We are so lucky to have a lot of creative kiddos in this class. I love it when they share what they have been working on at home or books they have read. Christian showed our class some of his Scratch projects he has created: Mace and Ary shared a comic book that they made: Keerah shared one of her favorite books with us and read some of the stories to the class: Steele brought in one of his Lego projects he created: If your student wants to bring in something to share with me and the class, I would love it! I also want to give a HUGE shout out to Olivia who won the 25 book challenge for Reading Plus!! Only a few students in the whole district won and she was one of them. The people from Reading Plus came into the classroom to present her with her prize. I am really proud of how hard she has worked in reading this year! I know I have already told all of you how amazing the kids did on their SAGE tests, but I just want you all to know that I am beyond proud of these kids!! They worked hard this year and took the SAGE tests seriously. To celebrate the end of SAGE, we had a bubble party. I can't believe there are only two weeks left in this year! We have a lot of fun things planned and we are definitely ending this year with a bang!!
Ms. O I can't believe that we are more than halfway through April. Spring is flying by. We have had so many exciting events that have taken place this past month. I think that it is probably best to show you with the great pictures I have taken. Don't forget that we have SAGE starting May 9th, the 3rd Grade program toward the end of May and our field trip to the planetarium on May 30th. May is going to be a busy month!! Ms. O Kaylee was our Character Ed recipient for March!! We had some wonderful parents come to our class to talk to us on career day. The kids had a blast at the College Week assembly! I loved the culture reports! We had some amazing presentations! Colton was our Character Ed recipient for February! Way to go!! I can't believe that we are already half way through March. This time of year goes by quickly. Don't forget that the first week of April is Spring Break. SAGE will start May 9th and go through May 18th. We also have our 3rd grade program in May and our yearly trip to the Planetarium!! It will be a very busy few weeks leading up to the end of the year. So far in March, we celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday by having some special guests visit our classroom. We also discussed International Women's Day by reading about two amazing women, Harriet Tubman and Malala Yousafzai. Reading books about these women led to some wonderful discussions in our classroom. The school was also treated to a fascinating assembly where a concert pianist performed for our students and they learned about famous composers. Alistair's mom has been coming on Fridays to read the book The Witches to the class. This is one of my favorite books and I love seeing the excitement when she reads the story to them. We have been also working on our culture unit. The students have loved learning about other cultures and countries. Miss Ary brought in a very interesting book about Egypt to share with the class. They especially liked the part of the book about mummies!! Our class also started Junior Achievement. A big thanks to Dave (Marlie's dad) for taking this project on!! It has been busy, but fun! I can't wait for the rest of the month!! Ms. O Below are some pictures of all of our fun activities!! Happy Thursday! I hope you all had a wonderful Valentine's Day! We had a great time in our class yesterday. It was pretty exciting because Google came to Sunrise and some of the classes were able to try out a new application that will launch this summer. The kids had a fun time exploring and using the application. This is something I would definitely use in my classroom on a regular basis. It was a wonderful opportunity!! We also had our Valentine's Day party yesterday. The students made some very creative boxes. I loved seeing how excited they were to share their Valentines with their classmates. I was also grateful for all of the Valentines that the students gave to me!! The party was fun and the kids had a lot of fun. Thank you so much to the amazing moms who came in and put the party together. I am so grateful for the wonderful support the kids and I get from all of you! Our class wouldn't be strong without all of you. I am lucky to have a wonderful class community. Don't forget that it is a four-day weekend!! I hope you all enjoy the extra days off. I have posted some pictures of our time with Google and Valentine's Day. Enjoy! Wow!! I know it has been awhile. January was a busy month. It was hard to keep up :) At the beginning of January, the students worked on their writing for "Seeing Stars." So the first thing we did was activate background knowledge by looking at the sky and making observations. I really loved the pictures that they drew. Their informative essays for this activity showed a lot of growth. We will go over them at Parent/Teacher Conferences at the end of the month. For our next story, "Around One Cactus," the students created fantastic desert sunsets. These are posted on my bulletin board and will be there for a few weeks. I hope you check them out!! They kids did a wonderful job. The field trip to Capitol Theatre was a success. I was sad that I missed out on all of the fun. The kids said they had a great time and enjoyed the dancing. I loved hearing about their favorite parts. I unfortunately do not have any pictures from the field trip :( I am looking forward to everything we have planned in February!! I promise I won't wait over a month to post again :) Porter was our Character Ed recipient for January: Sky observations, Mystery Reader, and desert sunsets: We finally made it to Christmas break!! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday. On our last day of 2017, the kids participated in some fun activities. We sang Blitzen's Boogie in the school's annual Singing Around the Tree assembly. They sounded great!! The kids that reach 90% or higher on Reflex Math had the opportunity to go to the third grade Reflex Math party. Also, the students that were chosen to be in the school's 200 Club were able to go to a special 200 Club party. I also did a lesson about the Northern Lights and the kids created their own Northern Lights. I think that they look wonderful. The class is full of creative kids!! Thank you so much for all the support you give the class. I am excited for the New Year and all of the great stuff we have planned! Happy Holidays! Ms. O Ellie was the Character Ed recipient for December! Northern Lights |
